Causes of Shoulder Pain

An injury is a common reason for shoulder pain. You might have swelling around the joint. For some people, you might have a reduced range of motion. You could sustain an injury at work if you lift frequently or while you're participating in sports. Injuries are most common during swimming, volleyball, or tennis. Sometimes, these sports cause chronic issues as well, such as tendinitis.

On the other hand, shoulder pain can also be chronic. With chronic shoulder pain, repetitive use causes degradation of your joint. A prime example is arthritis. You could also experience fibromyalgia, which can contribute to widespread pain, including in your shoulder.

Treatment for Shoulder Pain

The first part of the treatment process is a thorough examination of your shoulder. Dr. Boyd will want to see your range of motion and want to know when you experience pain as well as your hobbies and occupation. Dr. Boyd will also ask if you've sustained any injuries recently or if you have any previous surgeries.

Based on your results, Dr. Boyd can determine an appropriate course of action for you. This may consist of manually manipulating your shoulder joint to ensure its properly aligned.

During your treatment, our practitioner may recommend exercise therapy. With this option, Dr. Boyd guides you through exercises that work that joint slowly to promote healing. The exercises work the muscles and soft tissue to encourage blood flow to the area. Both factors can affect healing.

We may recommend cold or low level laser therapy and lifestyle changes to help reduce your pain and help with healing. Part of your treatment might also consist of Dr. Boyd educating you on ways to prevent an injury in the future. For instance, Dr. Boyd will show you the correct way to perform your sport or exercises that won't stress your shoulder.

Shoulder pain doesn't have to rule your world. With the right treatments, Dr. Boyd with his 39 years of experience will help you regain function and flexion, sometimes as much or more so than you had originally. We can also help you prevent injuries in the future.
